CMS7 - What's new?
This page gives you an idea about some of the new features of CMS7. This page gives you an overview of the changes but for those experienced CMS users, click here to see more details on these changes and how they actually work in CMS7.

The new features of CMS7
  • A simpler faster to use and more user friendly program.
    See the details for examples.
  • Greater ability to customise the database
CMS, as it has been a user led system, has a wide variety of tabs and fields incorporating different organisational requirements. CMS7 will allow the user to switch off screens or tabs that they do not require thus simplifying the system.
  • A wizard style interface making data entry and other routine operations faster.
  • Improved reporting facilities
Crystal Reports will be embedded into the system allowing users to report on a wider range of subjects and make and design their own reports.
  • The ability to link projects to organisational targets or Biodiversity Action Plan targets and report on these.
  • Links to the biological recording database, Recorder.
This will allow the display of species records generated by a CMS project.
  • The ability to use CMS7 for management planning systems other than CMS.
By allowing the user to customise the planning terminology and field labels used in the database, other planning approaches like Eurosite can be used in the database.
  • Functions to allow more efficient corporate use of CMS data.
CMS has often been used at the site level only and organisations have not benefited from being able to plan and report on actions corporately. Improvements will be made to make the management of corporate data easier.
  • The ability to report on multi-designation sites.
Many sites can have multi designations like SACs, SPAs, SSSIs or NNRs. Their boundaries can be coincident or even be an amalgamation of different sites. This will allow reporting across a range of sites to avoid having to enter data twice.
  • The introduction of a Project Plan Assessment tab.
This will allow the rapid interpretation of results of a project planned and carried out on a different site or by a different organisation so the management lessons learnt there can become useful to other site managers.
  • Upgrade of runtime database to Access 2003
  • Ability to set staff time and costs across individual years of the plan taking into account that these are often not the same over time.
This is possible at the moment, but it will now become much easier to do so at the planning stage.
  • Change feature and objective windows to fit with updates in CMS Planning Approach (see the Broads Case Study)
  • Project diary.
This will allow the rapid entry of an element of staff time or financial payment allowing easy querying and reporting.
  • Floating Help balloons appearing when the user hovers over a form or tab with the mouse to give rapid help on various aspects of the program.
  • Spell checks throughout the various memo fields in the program.
