Andy Brewer

Andy Brewer - Software Developer

Andy graduated with a Zoology degree and worked as a zoo keeper and entomologist before going on to do an MSc in Biological Computation and a PhD in Ecology. Before joining exeGesIS, he worked for the National Biodiversity Network as a technical manager and the Joint Nature Conservation Committee as an application developer. He has specialised in the management and analysis of large, spatial datasets for conservation planning.

Outside of work Andy enjoys spending time with his family, visiting nature reserves and watching wildlife, particularly birds.

Anne Brookes

Anne Brookes - Software Developer

Anne is a member of the CMSi team.  She has over ten years’ experience in various GIS consulting roles, specialising in application development and database design, mainly involving the management of environmental data.  Anne has worked overseas in New Zealand and spent two years in Mongolia with her husband, as VSO volunteers on a Biodiversity Project in the Eastern Steppe.  She studied Ecological Science at the University of Edinburgh and also holds an MSc in GIS from Leicester and a PhD in GIS and Freshwater Ecology.

Anne’s interests include cycling, hill-walking and following Rugby League with her husband.

Carol Bateman - PACS/GIS Consultant

Carol Bateman - PACS/GIS Consultant

Carol is the lead contact for the Planning Application Control System, for MapInfo Training and MapInfo sales. Prior to joining exeGesIS, Carol undertook a HNC in computing at the University of Glamorgan, followed by a Certificate in Education (Adult Learning) and Assessor qualifications (D32 & D33) at Merthyr Tydfil College. She has been working in the planning and environmental fields for the past 10 years and has several years experience in using/training MapInfo Professional.

Outside of work, her interests include showing rare breed sheep at agricultural shows throughout the UK, collecting antiques, and socialising with friends.

Chris Goddard

Chris Goddard - Contract Surveyor

Chris has an MA in Geography from the University of Cambridge. He has spent the last 9 years surveying Public Rights of Way, long distance routes and open green spaces. Before working with exeGesIS, he was an in-house surveyor for the Lake District National Park.

Outside of work, Chris enjoys writing, walking (still!), travelling and DJing.


Claire Lush - GIS Consultant

Claire Lush

Claire obtained a BSc in Physical Geography and French at Keele University, then spent a year living in southern France before returning to the UK to do a MSc in GIS at Nottingham University.

Prior to joining exeGesIS, Claire gained three years experience of GIS in local government working for Derbyshire County Council as a GIS Project Officer, where she was the primary contact for Education and Social Services.

Outside of work, Claire's main interests are karate and reading, but she also enjoys walking, climbing, caving and playing the violin.

Crispin Flower - Heritage IT Consultant

Crispin Flower - Heritage IT Consultant

Crispin is primarily responsible for the HBSMR system used by Historic Environment Records, and also provides database and GIS consultancy along with training for archaeologists.

Prior to joining exeGesIS, Crispin was Sites and Monuments Record Officer for the West of Scotland Archaeology Service for 7 years, carrying out archaeological casework, SMR data management and database/GIS development. At University Crispin took Natural Sciences, Archaeological Science, and then an MA in Landscape Archaeology, then worked as a Research Assistant on various academic projects, and on a wide range of excavation and surveys in Britain and abroad.

Crispin spends his spare time with his family, and/or running up and down mountains.

David Bennett - CAMS Consultant

David is a member of the CAMS team. He graduated in Engineering at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne before completing postgraduate studies in GIS at Leicester.  Since then he has worked for English Nature and latterly Buckinghamshire County Council in Rights of Way, IT and GIS.

David Mitchel - CMS Development Consultant

David heads up the CMS unit of exeGesIS where he leads on all aspects of the management, service delivery and development of CMS. Prior to joining exeGesIS, David worked for the Environment & Heritage Service in Northern Ireland, for 12 years, first of all as an assistant warden in a busy Country Park and then, for the last 8 years as the Data Manager, running a GIS system, biological recording (especially the development and use of Recorder 2002) and Northern Ireland’s input into the National Biodiversity Network.  David studied Geology at the University of Edinburgh and also holds an MSc in Environmental Management from the University of Ulster.

David is also a keen mycologist, hill walker and photographer.

Hartmut Tschauner - Heritage IT Consultant

Hartmut Tschauner - Heritage IT Consultant

Hartmut is an archaeologist with a MA from the University of Bonn, and a PhD from Harvard. Prior to joining exeGesIS, he eked out an existence as a globalized roving academic, teaching archaeological computing, directing two archaeological GIS laboratories and conducting research at Harvard, Seoul National University, the Catholic University of Peru, and the State University of New York. Joining the exeGesIS heritage data team in 2009, Hartmut brings with him an extensive  knowledge of custom digital data collection and software solutions for archaeological applications.

James Perrins - Consultant/Developer

James Perrins - Consultant/Developer

James originally trained as a biologist, with a particular interest in the marine environment and conservation management.  He then went on to do an MSc. in Biological Computation followed by a PhD at the University of York. He has experience working on conservation related projects in various parts of the world.

He is an experienced developer in a range of development environments and plays a lead role in many of the more technical projects that exeGesIS SDM gets asked to undertake. In recent years he has worked closely with a range of conservation organisations, both Government and NGO, using new web technologies to improve data access to species and habitat data.

He still attempts to escape the office for a week or two a year and get involved in some real fieldwork to keep his hand in and so that he keeps in touch with all elements of data handling from field collection through to data analysis and presentation (he is a commercially qualified scuba diver – so takes part in marine biological surveys, or undertakes some habitat mapping.)

Away from the office James tries to get outside as much as possible, enjoying diving, sailing, skiing, canoeing and anything else that he gets the chance to do – oh – and he milks cows once a week as well!

James graduated in 2004 with a BSc(Hons) in Website Management and since then he has gained significant experience as a Web Developer in both the public and private sector. He has a keen interest in technology, the Internet, web design, web development and mobile application development and is a member of the British Computing Society.

Jon Young - Countryside Access Consultant and Business Manager

Before coming to exeGesIS in 1999 Jon worked for 13 years in recreation and access management in a national park environment and also worked as a countryside consultant. In a former life Jon was an engineer working in the aerospace and oil industries. In addition to engineering qualifications Jon holds postgraduate qualifications in Countryside Management and an MSc. in Environmental Management.

Outside of work Jon's interests are walking the Welsh countryside with his dogs, caving and paragliding.

Kate Short - Software Developer

Kate obtained a BSc. in Computer Science and Mathematics from the University of Leeds and then spent a year backpacking around Australia. On her return to the UK, a decision she still occasionally regrets, she undertook a MSc. in Multimedia Applications (Web Authoring) at the University of Teesside. After graduating Kate worked at the University as a Technical Web Developer / Consultant for four years before joining exeGesIS.

Katharine Evans

Katharine Evans - Surveyor

Katharine has worked as a contract surveyor for exeGesIS since 2004 and has completed many public path and other surveys across England & Wales. Katherine has public sector experience working within rights of way management for two local authorities and also holds an MSc in Rural Resource Management and a BSc in Environmental Economics and Environmental Management.


Kathryn Steemson - Rights of Way/GIS Consultant

Kathryn's main role is working with the Countryside Access Management System. This involves providing support, training and consultancy for CAMS and the new Path Surveyor system. She is also a MapInfo trainer.

Before joining exeGesIS in August 2002 Kathryn undertook a BSc. in Geography and an MSc. in Waste Management. She then went on to work as the GIS Officer for Dartmoor National Park Authority, where she was responsible for the development of the Authorities GIS.

Outside of work Kathryn enjoys playing sport including hockey and volleyball, and also walking and cycling in the countryside. During the summer months she can be found rowing and surfing.

Keith Westcott - Heritage IT Consultant

Keith Westcott - Heritage IT Consultant

Keith originally qualified as a Biologist Ecologist but spent 15 years as a Field Archaeologist mainly with Exeter Archaeology and Oxford Archaeology. He has worked on a wide variety of archaeological projects, particularly projects relating to standing buildings. He obtained an M.Sc. in Archaeological Computing at the University of Southampton and also holds a BSc in Biology and a Ph.D in Biological Research. Before joining exeGesIS Keith spent 7 years as a Curatorial Officer with the Archaeology Data Service in York.

Laine Skinner - Developer

Laine originally trained as a Chemist with a particular interest in quantum chemistry at the University of Leicester. He went on to complete an MSc in remote sensing that then led to him to undertake a PhD on the use of satellite radar and interferometry to measure forest biomass and at Swansea University. Laine has a keen interest in emerging technology in the GIS sector and has worked closely with industry leaders in GIS developing spatial applications across web, desktop and mobile platforms.

In his spare time, Laine enjoys playing basketball and cricket for local teams and will generally be found in the pub watching any Welsh rugby international match that happens to be on.

Maria Pettitt - Company Secretary / Accounts Technician

Maria manages the company accounts and processes much of the financial paperwork. In addition to this she also finds time to lecture in finance management.

Maria has completed a degree in business administration and also holds a PGCE. In between managing accounts and lecturing spare time is spent learning to play squash, gardening and socialising.

After two years working in production writing the occasional piece of software, Martin obtained a BSc in Computer Science from the University of Bath. After this, he joined the Environment Agency and spent two years developing cost saving monitoring solutions and software applications.

Mike Francis

Mike Francis - Contract Developer

Mike’s background lies mainly in the development of information management systems within the agricultural sector. Mike is a Microsoft Certified Professional, has over 20 years’ experience of software development and holds an MSc in Quantitative Genetics.

In his spare time Mike enjoys running about on the Pennines with his dog and persuading his children that it’s nice to be outdoors.


Mike Lush - Countryside Management Project Consultant

Mike Lush - Consultant Ecologist

Mike is an ecologist with a decade of field experience and a strong interest in GIS. He started his career as a trainee Ecological Surveyor at Somerset Environmental Records Centre and has also held posts with the Kent Wildlife Habitat Survey and Just Ecology. Mike has a good general knowledge of wildlife and conservation, with particular expertise in botany and entomology. Joining the exeGesIS team in 2008, he came with a reputation for combining spatial data management and analysis with sound ecological knowledge. Other previous work involved management planning, detailed botanical surveys, desk-based reviews and Ecological Impact Assessment.

Mike is a myrmecologist in his spare time (he’s an ant geek), primarily conducting taxonomic studies in the UK and internationally, including Europe, Africa and Australia. However, he currently spends almost all of his spare time on house renovation.

Mike Stacey-Gee

Mike Stacey-Gee - Developer

Mike started in IT development over 30 years ago when mainframes were steam powered, and has worked on projects as the sole developer and managed projects with 150 developers He then changed tack to become a test manager for one of the leading UK consultancies, but his love of “coding” led him back to the USA where he built several large systems for the shipping industry. He narrowly escaped 9/11 due to a move across the Hudson River a few weeks prior and is now settled in Wales and working as a key member of the exeGesIS development team. Outside of work Mike contents himself with adding to his collection of chefs tools and dreaming of the ultimate kitchen.

Paul Mills - Developer

Paul Mills - Developer

Paul has been responsible for the development of many of the company's main systems right from the early days when the main office was in Tony's bedroom. Paul has an extensive knowledge of spatial database design and development and is skilled in specialist application development using MapBasic, Microsoft .NET, and Object Orientated programming languages.

When asked about leisure activities Paul points out that he is the slayer of the three prime evils: Mephisto, Diablo and Baal. Which we hope is a reference to computer gaming.

Richard Bowen - HBSMR and GIS consultant

Richard Bowen - HBSMR and GIS consultant

Richard initially qualified as a mechanical engineer with a BSc from University College Swansea. He then embarked upon a sixteen year career as an engineer officer in the RAF, retiring as a squadron leader in 1996. During his time in the RAF he obtained an MSc in computer science from Imperial College London. Since leaving the forces he has completed a post-graduate diploma in countryside management and has, over the last sixteen years, worked with GIS, mainly in the area of countryside access - four years as a public rights of way officer with Norfolk County Council and, more recently, as a CAMS, HBSMR and GIS consultant with exeGesIS.

Away from work Richard enjoys tinkering with old cars and motorcycles, house renovation, walking and playing jazz (drums and a bit of sax). He is involved with a local agricultural show and has, until recently been the chair of governors of a local primary school.

Richard is a member of CAMS team. He graduated in 2009 with a BSc in Geography & Geo-informatics, having completed his dissertation on the Spatial Distribution of Light Pollution. Prior to joining exeGesIS he has worked in web design and at a Hydrometry Consultancy.

Richard originally trained as a marine geographer at Cardiff University and then gained over 10 years experience in administration and marketing before joining exeGesIS in 2010. Richard is responsible for the day-to-day running of the office and is the person you are most likely to speak to when you call our main head office number.

Outside of work he is keen to conquer the logistics of family life to allow more time for climbing and guitar playing.

Simon is a member of the CAMS team. Before joining exeGesIS Simon worked as an ecologist at the Broads National Park Authority, a grasslands project officer in Sussex and the Senior GIS Officer for South Gloucestershire Council. In addition to his countryside background Simon has several years experience in GIS management in the public sector and an MSc in Computing Science.

Steve Ellwood - Heritage IT Consultant

Steve is a member of the HBSMR team. Prior to joining exeGesIS, Steve worked for English Heritage at the Greater London Sites and Monuments Record for almost three years after leaving a demanding senior IT management role in the city and retraining as an archaeologist, completing both a BSc and an MA in Archaeology at UCL. He is learning to embrace life away from the bright lights of a big city and is enjoying the Welsh outdoors. He has recently taken up fencing and is hoping to get back to archery soon.

Stewart Bellamy - Developer

Stewart originally graduated with an BSc (Hons) Biological Science and has since gone to achieve an MSc (Hons) in Computing, from Staffordshire University. He has worked as a Software Engineer since 2001 and comes to us with expertise primarily in Database and Web Application development.

Outside of work Stewart is a competitive fell runner and mountain marathoner and has ambitions to one day beat Crispin in a fell race (having finishing just one place behind him on several occasions).

Sylvina Tilbury - HBSMR Consultant

Sylvina came to exeGesIS from Highland Council where she managed (using HBSMR, naturally) a well-regarded Historic Environment Record and associated website. After flirting with a career in music, Sylvina graduated from University College London with a degree in Archaeology. She is an experienced historic environment professional, working in development management archaeology for North Yorkshire County Council and Humber Archaeology Partnership before joining Highland Council in 2007.

After 4 ½  years in the Highlands Sylvina is gradually adjusting to the relative metropolis of Talgarth and the Brecon Beacons. With two small children at home she can’t quite remember what spare time is, but she does try to keep up her skills on the piano and violin and she is looking forward to growing her own fruit and veg again in the warmer (?) southern climate.

Timothy is a trainee CAMS consultant. A graduate of Aberystwyth University (in Geography), he then worked in Carmarthenshire County Council’s Rights of Way Department before coming to work for exeGesIS in July 2007. Timothy’s main interest outside of work is walking, but he also enjoys making models and has been known to take an interest in gardening.

Tim Taylor - Aerial Photography Surveyor

Tim manages the Mini-Plane used to capture our remote images. Tim worked as a Countryside Access and Rights of Way Officer in Lincolnshire for the past 10 years. Prior to that Tim worked with exeGesIS as surveyor manager. Tim has a degree in Landscape Ecology with a HND in Forestry and has been involved with various conservation projects and surveys.

In his spare time Tim is found enjoying the views from up a tree, on a roof, from a mountain top or on his vintage tractor. Tim is interested in landscape history.

Tony Pettitt - Consultant / Developer

Tony is an experienced developer and along with Paul has built many software applications that are now widely used throughout the UK. Tony's particular skills are in system design, coding and advanced mapping developments. He has been at the forefront of GIS use for countryside management applications for over fifteen years. Tony has an honours degree in Topographic Science and Oceanography and leads the exeGesIS development team.
