Norfolk Heritage Explorer

Working closely together with Norfolk Landscape Archaeology we have developed the Norfolk Heritage Explorer, a sophisticated website making Norfolk's rich Historic Environment Record data accessible to the public. We have used cutting-edge technologies including web services, web mapping services and GoogleMaps to create this exciting portal. All data is served up directly from HBSMR and thematic content is created and maintained within the HBSMR Themes Module.

There are several ways for the user to explore the dataset: A variety of search interfaces exist, including an Advanced Search (Figure 1) allowing keyword, spatial and temporal searches. Alternatively it is possible to start off with a number of thematic pages explaining specific aspects of the record, such as articles about priories in Norfolk (Figure 2).

Multiple search results can be displayed as a list or on an interactive map (Figure 3). Each result record is represented by a little "NHE" flag and a simple click brings up the name and a link to the full details.

Once the full details of a record have been requested they are displayed with a map that can be switched on or off (Figure 4). Thematic detail records may contain images in the text and related resources attached to them (Figure 5).
